Carbon Fiber Helmets ⦠Tips On Finding The Best One
Traveling the open road on a motorcycle offers unique joys. While helmets were traditionally viewed as a hindrance to the freedom of the road, now most motorcyclists consider them indispensable lifesavers. Riders know that finding discount motorcycle helmets that meet the highest standards for safety will enhance their riding experience and potentially save their lives.
Getting a good fit in a new or used helmet is significant. Any helmet that feels like it's 'floating' on your head at highway speed can be at best an annoyance, and at worst a distraction that could cause an accident. Getting a discount is always great, but if you can't find a discount motorcycle helmet that is's just right, consider the extra money for a new helmet well spent on your safety and comfort.
there are several good, yet cheap motorcycle helmets on the market. If an inexpensive helmet meets certain qualifications, a rider can be sure that it perform best when it is required most. Most significantly, the helmet must be D.O.T, or office of transport, licensed. The Department of transportation has a highly specific set of minimum safety standards that any helmet they certify must meet. Among these, the helmet must provide substantive protection from serious injury. In addition to protection from cataclysmic harm, helmets provide a myriad of benefits that may reinforce any rider's experience. Besides reducing wind noise and safeguarding the rider from insects, a helmet can basically increase focus while riding.
A DOT motorcycle helmet will have one in. of froth to pad your head. This foam is meant to help absorb and spread the shock of hitting the ground. A general rule is that the thicker the padding, the safer the helmet. Although some riders may go for a'skullcap' look, those don't meet the DOT standards and a not really useful upon impact.
Another quality characteristic of a DOT motorcycle helmet is the chin strap. This is what will keep the helmet forcefully on. Obviously full face ones are the most effective in an accident, so be certain to look for one. Although the DOT doesn't require that all motorcycle helmets are full face, it does require that they have awfully sturdy chin straps. Make efforts to pull on these straps before purchase to be sure that they may be able to withhold the fast speeds that are associated with motorcycles.
Carbon fiber is very fine strands of carbon that can be twisted together and then woven. Even though each strand of carbon fiber is thinner than a human hair, it is extremely strong. Carbon fiber is five times as strong as steel but only about one-third as heavy. It also has excellent tensile strength. This means that carbon fiber can 'give' or stretch quite a bit before it comes apart. All of these features indicate that carbon fiber helmets are better able to absorb more of the force of an impact than most other helmet materials. It is also far less likely that sharp objects can penetrate a carbon fiber helmet shell.
Carbon fiber helmets are usually made by placing layers of carbon fiber in a helmet shell mold and then coating the fibers with an acrylic resin or some other type of plastic. In some cases, this process is done under high pressure to make an even stronger laminate. The resulting products are helmets that are lightweight, extremely strong barriers between heads and hard surfaces.
The helmet's appearance, color, finish, and graphics are an important part of the purchasing process. For a rider, finding a helmet that talks to their individual personality is critical. However the more complicated designs can increase the price substantially . Most experienced riders like florescent or solid colors that are simply visible. Foregoing fancy helmet designs may decrease the price of a great helmet and make it reasonable.
States with helmet laws on the books require motorcyclists to wear helmets that meet safety standards established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). These standards include things like minimum visibility, impact force absorption, and amount of face/head covered. Before the advent of carbon fiber helmets, helmets that met all the approved DOT criteria could be quite bulky and heavy. The use of carbon fiber has allowed more latitude among helmet designers to create some smaller, more streamlined styles that are comfortable for the rider but still provide the safety the DOT requires.
